Regarding Dyes used by manufacturer:All of our apparel is dyed using non-azo chemical dyes. These dyes are the least toxic industrial dyes that can be found today. Although we support the development of natural dyes and continue to work with factories experimenting with development of these dyes, it is not currently possible to dye large-scale production with natural dyes.Many of the so-called "natural" dyes are actually not good for the environment as they require heavy metals as “mordants” (to adhere the dye to the fabric) which is much more toxic than the chemicals we are using. Non-azo dyes are considered environmentally "stable" because they do not bond with natural cells – i.e., they will not bond to fish, plants or human skin. (Azo dyes bond chemically to carbon which means they actually change the integral structure of cells they come into contact with!) Because non-azo dyes do not bond to "nature" they also do not bond as well to natural fibres and generally do not give as consistent or bright colours as azo dyes. This means that there is often residue from the dyeing process that remains on the fabric. Although this is unlikely to affect most people, those who are sensitive to dyes should wash garments prior to wearing with a combination of detergent plus a few tablespoons of salt and baking soda. |
